DEAN'S MESSAGE
The days and weeks in pharmacy school seem to pass so slowly ... A
cycle of lecture and labs, rotations and assignments. Will examinations
never end? Will summer never come? And then it is over. The ceremony of
honors convocation, the pageantry of commencement, and all the
celebratory gatherings and parties and dinners are over in a flash. All too
soon we realize that the time spent in school was brief indeed.
Members of the class of 1993 are embarking on careers that will embrace
the first third of the twenty-first century. Pharmacy will continue to have
much to offer to health care and to patients who need drug therapy.
Pharmacy will have much to offer to you — the realization that you
contribute directly, every day — to the health and perhaps the very lives of
those you treat.
But changes will also occur. Pharmacy in the year 2025 promises to be
much different from pharmacy in 1993. And we cannot predict with
certainty what those differences will be. Therefore, it is up to each in-
dividual to trudge the path of life-long learning in order to be ready for 2025
when it arrives.
But it is comforting to know that in 2025 we will have this copy of the
Terra Mariae, assembled with so much care by this year's staff, that we can
use to rekindle the memories of the School of Pharmacy, way back in the
olden days of 1993!
David A. Knapp, Ph.D.
Dean, School of Pharmacy

my jokes, unlimited questions and my lavished

not. If we do meet again we shall smile. If not,
then this parting was well made. Please depart
not from your God and above all use your
knowledge to make this world a better place for
future generations. You'll all be on my mind.

CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF
I PHARMACY AND THERAPEUTICS
FOR THE ELDERLY
j The Center for the Study of Pharmacy and Therapeutics for the Elderly serves as the focal point of all
geriatric education, service, and research activities within the school. It provides continuing education
programs on both state and national levels. Funding from federal and private sources allows the center to
encourage and support relevant research by faculty and graduate students from all school departments.
The center is administratively responsible for the Elder-Health Program, the Parke-Davis Center for the
Education of Elderly and the Maryland Caregiver Program.
The Parke-Davis Center for the Education of Elderly develops educational materials for use by the Elder
Health and Elder-Ed programs. The Elder-Health Program trains pharmacy students and retired phar-
macists in the social and psychological aspects of drug use among the elderly as well as the therapeutic
goals of treatment for prescribed and over-the-counter medications. They then give presentations for
community groups of elderly.

Welcome to the Profession
Congratulations to the Class of 1993!
The Maryland Pharmacists Association has been behind you during your
days at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. But, although
your formal academic education is finished, your opportunity to learn and
grow as a pharmacy professional is only just beginning.
That's what your state association is for. If you are serious about
progress and concerned about expanding the profession you are now
entering, we urge you to remain active in MPhA. Find out how you can
contribute and help us all determine the future course of pharmacy!

EDITORS' NOTE
When we first entered Pharmacy School, a door was opened to us.
Behind this door was a multitude of new experiences, friendships, and
emotions. Although not ad of the above-mentioned could be included in
this yearbook, we hope that you will enjoy reflecting upon the events
and faces that were captured in this edition.
We would now fifee to take this opportunity to thank ad those who
helped to make this yearbook possible: Jacquelyn Lucy, our advisor,
for her ideas and assistance; Tuni Cha, for her guidance and, not to
mention, the Senior pages; Barbara Brannan, assistant editor, for
her input and public relations responsibilities; the photographers, Eric
Speaks, Brian Toth, and Joe Scaiese, for ad the pictures they
supplied to us; and, of course, the Terra Mariac staff, Christina,
Jung, Abigail, Thorn, Mclaine, Letitia, and Jeanette, for
helping us with the layouts. We could not have done it without ad of
youl
